Type of job
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant position to work with Dr. Ignasi Ribas at the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC-CSIC) in Bellaterra (Barcelona). The successful candidate will participate in a project aimed at understanding the impact of stellar activity on the detection and characterisation of exoplanets. The project will employ both observations and modelling techniques to investigate all the different aspects of stellar magnetic activity and their impact on both precise radial velocities and photometry in the framework of the StarSim code, developed by the group The results will have direct application to data obtained by the CARMENES instrument and will be also relevant to the ARIEL mission. The proposed work will benefit from direct access to a variety of telescopes and instruments in the Calar Alto (CARMENES), Canary Islands (GTC, HARPS-N) and ESO (HARPS, VLT) observatories, as well as to data from ESA missions.
The position will be initially a two-year appointment but can be extended up to a total of three years depending on the availability of funds. A starting date in March 2020 is foreseen. A PhD in Astrophysics or a related field is required. Programming skills in Python language are essential. Research experience in the field of exoplanet detection techniques (Doppler spectroscopy and transits) and stellar activity modelling will be valued. Applications shall include a CV, a publication list, a summary of previous and current research (maximum 3 pages) and be submitted electronically in PDF format to I. Ribas at firstname.lastname@example.org. Applicants should also provide the names of two persons to whom letters of reference could be requested.
