How do you imagine Mars's north pole? This topographic image shows the region surrounding it (the north pole would be outside the picture, further to the right). The ground looks like a staircase up towards the pole: the lowest altitude regions are represented as blue/green and the highest are red/white/brown. Two escarpments, or precipices, separate each step of the staircase. These walls of ice mark the boundary between what experts call Planum Boreum (the region next to the pole) and the lower terrain of Olympia Planum, with the vast sand dune fields that can be seen to the left. The image was created from data collected by ESA’s Mars Express on 14 April 2023.
